Kai Kristiansen for Vildbjerg Møbelfabrik
VM 214 Floating Shelf
A rare original Danish Mid-Century Modern floating shelf designed by Kai Kristiansen for Vildbjerg Møbelfabrik.
Far more than a functional wall shelf, the VM 214 is a beautifully considered piece of Danish design. Once mounted, its clean architectural form creates the impression of a piece gently floating against the wall, while the natural teak brings warmth, depth and character to the space.
The design reflects Kai Kristiansen's distinctive approach to Scandinavian modernism — restrained, highly functional and quietly sculptural. Every proportion feels intentional, allowing the piece to function equally well as furniture and as a display object.
Original Kai Kristiansen designs remain highly sought after among collectors of Danish Mid-Century Modern furniture. His work for Vildbjerg Møbelfabrik is particularly collectible, with comparable original Vildbjerg pieces currently offered through the European vintage market at prices ranging from several hundred to several thousand euros depending on the model, rarity and condition.
The VM 214 itself is seldom encountered on the current market, making this an especially appealing piece for collectors looking beyond the more commonly seen Kai Kristiansen designs.
Perfect for displaying books, ceramics, art objects or a carefully selected collection, the shelf adds character without visually overwhelming the room.
A quiet piece of Danish design history — and a beautiful example of how functional furniture can become collectible design.
